Well, on January 13th at 6:35pm my wife gave birth to our first child. Her name is Mia Marie Simmons. She was born at 7lbs, 6 oz and has blond hair and dark blue eyes. It is amazing the things you notice about a baby when you hold them.
In the last two days I have heard several people use the expression that "babies are like magnets". Why is that? Is it because they are just so cute? Is it because we want to feel how heavy or light they are? Or is it that we all recognize the miracle of new life, and somehow want to hold a fragile expression of that miracle. I believe it is the latter. I believe that you can't help but look at a baby and see all the little body parts, and wonder how it is possible that something like that is possible. I believe that without God, it would not be possible.
Think about the process that it takes this new life to come into existence. There is no way to explain away that God is the only one who can make that happen. Eyes that see, ears that hear, fingers that grab, legs that stretch, mouths that taste. All of these things take intricate design and purpose to be formed, and those are only the examples that we see with our naked eye. Think about everything inside of us that works together to sustain us. Is it possible that our bodies are mere examples of evolution? Is it possible that our bodies could have simply evolved into these vessels with such intricate blood systems and organ systems. I think not. Only God could accomplish this miracle. When I sit and hold my newborn baby, I see it to be a living, breathing testament to the power of our God.
So, when we see a new life, when we are drawn to go pick up a baby that just looks too cute. May we realize that we are being drawn to a miracle that God has done. May we realize that it is the power of God that moves us in this way. And may we embrace that new life and know that in doing so, we are embracing God.
